Massive data flow
As a program manager (PM) in the energy market, PVNED is one of the largest national players. CEO Henk Nieboer of PVNED explained: “We serve many clients in the energy market, so it is essential to come up with smart solutions.” Henk is excited about the new developments, although he would prefer to capture all CO2. Whereas his core business is trading, he fully supports ecommit’s efforts: “Half of the offshore wind farms are used for data centres, which is not very sustainable and burdens the grid. That’s why I’m in favour of offsetting with the help of ecommit.”
Creating benefits together
Regarding modern development, Henk says, “I think what is happening now is very good. Fossil fuels are being phased out and renewables are being used more and more. I myself am in commerce. That in itself is not sustainable, but we do work with sustainable parties. While those customers are busy producing renewable energy, we are processing an enormous amount of data. It is the CO2 emissions from that data that we like to compensate. What I personally like best is to physically pull real CO2 out of the air and store it somewhere, so for now, CO2 compensation through ecommit is the best way for us to make our business itself more sustainable. We compensate on our travel movements, but predominantly on data. We use a lot of data ourselves, because it allows us to balance the system with our predictions and adjust the trade accordingly. The platform of supply and demand is the part where we process everything. This is how we work together for a better world. Creating benefits together is slogan, and that’s how we do it.”
Partnership with ecommit
Henk continues, “I met the people of ecommit at Business Netwerk Zeeland. Of course, what ecommit does is very different from what we do; we are in the trading business, but I still find it very interesting what they do. If you see that wind farms are being set up at sea, with more than half of them being used for data centers, then that is not very sustainable and moreover it puts a strain on the grid. I’m then in favor of compensating for that, and that’s why I’m working with ecommit.”
